Since 2013, Akram Boutros has piloted an unprecedented transformation of Cuyahoga County’s public health care system.

Under his leadership, MetroHealth has expanded to create an Integrated Delivery System that provides care at more than 20 community health centers, four emergency departments, four clinics in Discount Drug Mart stores, five MetroExpressCare locations and nine pharmacies in addition to the hospital on its main campus. Now a $1 billion operation, MetroHealth caregivers treat patients at more than 1.2 million visits a year.

Over the past three years, The MetroHealth System has improved Cuyahoga County by creating more than 1,000 additional jobs, sending doctors into a dozen Cleveland schools and constructing an $82 million addition to its Critical Care Pavilion. Annual operating revenues have grown from $783 million in 2012 to $934 million in 2015. In 2015, MetroHealth returned $223 million – 24.6 percent of its operating expenses – to Cuyahoga County in free care and community benefit programs.
