The MetroHealth System has appointed Donald “Chip” Wiper III, MD, as its new Chair of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. Dr. Wiper, who joined MetroHealth in August, also serves as Center Director, Women’s Health.

“I’ve always been impressed with MetroHealth’s mission and commitment to the community,” Dr. Wiper says. “I’m thrilled to join this impressive team of caregivers who demonstrate every day an unwavering commitment to providing high-quality, personalized care to the individuals we serve.”

Dr. Wiper most recently served as Professor in the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and as Professor in the School of Health Research at Clemson University. Prior to his experience in South Carolina, he was Associate Professor at the University of Vermont, Maine Medical Center; and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Greenville Health System in South Carolina, now part of Prisma Health.

Among his other roles during his tenure at Greenville Health, Dr. Wiper served as Vice President for Institutional Culture, Experience and Organizational Science; Women's Services Medical Director; Chief Clinical Officer for Patient Experience; and was a founding board member and manager of Greenville Health System's clinically integrated network/accountable care organization.

“Dr. Wiper brings an incredible wealth of knowledge to MetroHealth, and we are confident he will work with our dedicated team of physicians, advanced practice providers and other staff to deliver safe, high-quality obstetric and gynecological care to our patients,” says Bernard Boulanger, MD, Executive Vice President, Provider Enterprise & Academic Affairs.

Dr. Wiper, a native of Ohio, received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University and completed a residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at University Hospitals, followed by a fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Wiper is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology with subspecialty board certification in Gynecologic Oncology.

MetroHealth’s Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology offers a full suite of services to care for patients over their entire lifespan – from routine care to pregnancy care and treatment for complex gynecologic conditions. This winter, MetroHealth will also open a new birthing center, which will include spacious private rooms and a state-of-the-art neonatal intensive care unit.
