Newsweek Names MetroHealth Among Best Maternity Hospitals

The MetroHealth System once again has been named among the best maternity hospitals in the United States by Newsweek. The designation, part of the prestigious hospital ratings list for 2023, is presented by Newsweek and Statista Inc., the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider.
MetroHealth's commitment to providing outstanding pregnancy care for its community goes back more than 90 years, with the delivery of more than 160,000 babies since its now-retired labor and delivery suites were opened in 1974. The system renewed that commitment in January of 2023, with the opening of a new Birthing Center and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to expectant mothers and their families. The center offers 10 birthing rooms, private rooms with space for families, a continued care nursery, wireless fetal monitoring systems and a state-of-the-art NICU.
"This recognition is a testament to the compassionate care our team provides every day," said Kimberly Green, RN, Vice President, Women & Children Services. “Our new Birthing Center and NICU reflect that commitment to personalized care and the communities we serve.”
"Our research has led to treatments that have improved outcomes for patients in our community and beyond, and we are known for our expertise with both low- and high-risk pregnancies," said Donald "Chip" Wiper III, MD, Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. "It is especially gratifying to be recognized for the high-quality, individualized care our patients and their families have come to expect from MetroHealth."
To ensure the quality and validity of the ranking, Newsweek and Statista used a complex method of evaluation drawn from three data sources.
- Nationwide Online Survey: Health care professionals and hospital managers with knowledge about maternity processes. For example, neonatal and perinatal doctors, nurses and midwives were asked to recommend leading maternity hospitals in the U.S.
- Hospital Quality Metric: Metrics relevant to maternity care from a variety of public sources were collected with a focus on indicators relevant to maternity care.
- Results from Patient Surveys: Publicly available data from hospital patient surveys were used to analyze patient experience.
