The biggest gift in our history, from two of our longest-serving providers

After a combined more than 60 years of service to MetroHealth, Dr. Alfred F. Connors, Jr., and Dr. Mildred Lam have seen – and done – it all.

They’ve dedicated their careers to our mission of serving everyone who needs us. And with a newly announced gift, the largest individual philanthropic contribution in MetroHealth’s history, they’re making sure future generations of providers and researchers will have that same opportunity.

Their gift will carry on their legacy of service and leadership. It will establish three endowed research professorships and one endowed teaching fellowship as tributes to the couple’s parents. Two endowed research professorships, one named after each Dr. Connors and Dr. Lam, will be created by their estate. Click here for more details about the endowments.

According to Dr. Connors, the couple’s gift proves that MetroHealth’s Transformation is about more than construction projects. “Rather than putting our money into new buildings, we thought we’d support the people in those buildings. This gift will help attract excellent faculty and support innovative research and teaching,” he said.

Drs. Connors and Lam’s contribution will also serve as the first lead contribution to the MetroHealth Foundation’s five-year, $100 million philanthropic campaign, “For All of Us.” In addition to raising money for education and research, the campaign focuses on advancing health equity, nurturing community well-being and cultivating neighborhood prosperity.

Thank you isn’t enough to express what their generosity means to our future, but neither Dr. Connors nor Dr. Lam have ever done anything for the accolades. Even now, the couple doesn’t want to focus on what they’ve given to MetroHealth. “These gifts also reflect our own pride in MetroHealth,” said Dr. Lam. “It has been a privilege to serve the mission of this institution over the years. We are grateful for the care it has provided for our community and for our family.”
